- Ethereum Foundation renames its R&D division to “Protocol”
- New focus on L1 scaling, blob improvements, and UX
- Restructuring signals a strategic shift for Ethereum
The Ethereum Foundation has officially restructured and rebranded its Protocol R&D team. Now called simply “Protocol,” the team is taking on a sharper, more defined mission: to enhance Layer 1 (L1) scalability, optimize blob usage, and streamline user experience (UX) across the Ethereum ecosystem.
This move is more than a cosmetic change. It reflects Ethereum’s growing need for focused innovation at the base layer, especially as the network continues to grow in both user base and technical complexity.
Prioritizing Layer 1 and Blobs
Layer 1 scalability has been a longstanding challenge for Ethereum. With rising transaction volumes and the continued rollout of Ethereum 2.0, improving L1 efficiency is critical. The Protocol team will now focus on building scalable core infrastructure, making Ethereum more efficient without sacrificing decentralization or security.
Another major technical priority is scaling “blobs”—temporary data used in proto-danksharding (EIP-4844). Blobs are crucial for enabling cheaper data availability for rollups, which in turn supports Ethereum’s broader scaling roadmap. The Protocol team’s work here will lay the groundwork for long-term performance gains.
Enhancing User Experience Across the Board
Beyond backend improvements, the new Protocol team is also zeroing in on user experience. Ethereum has long been criticized for its steep learning curve and sometimes clunky interactions. By integrating UX into its core R&D efforts, the team aims to make Ethereum more accessible and efficient for developers and users alike.
This restructuring also helps clarify the Foundation’s role in Ethereum’s future. While the broader community remains decentralized, a more focused and strategic R&D team ensures that foundational upgrades can move forward smoothly.
